I have a problem with my 2003 F250 4 door 4 wheel drive.
I am far from a master mechanic, but I will try to describe. I get a klunk in my front end when I first start the truck. It is on the passenger side and happens after starting the truck and sitting for 30 to 60 seconds, or when I put it into gear. Doesnt matter if it is reverse or drive. To me it is almost as if the 4 wheel drive is, for just an instance, trying to engage on that tire. Sometimes you can feel it through the floor boards, sometimes it is just a faint noise. And just to make it more fun to try and get someone to diag, sometimes it will not appear at all. especially if the vehicle is good and warm. I live in what some call BFE, and by the time I drive her to a mechanic, (preferably Ford, due to the warranty) I have gone better than 50 miles. If anyone can give me an idea on this, I would sure be appreciative.
I've got a 2001 F250 and I get a similar noise. It just scares the crap out of me because it is so loud and I am just starting to move, so I think I hit something. It was explained to me by a Ford technician that it is the vent door or one of the doors that is closing or opening hard. It only happens to me when I am running the AC. Can't say it happens all the time either. Maybe the door is closed or open the way it is suppose to be when I don't hear a sound. Hope this helps.
It's normal on our trucks! The A/C system loses vac. pressure while the engine is off, the blend? door slowly opens up, but once you start the engine, *WHAM* it slams shut because you've got vaccum again! If you turn your A/C to the OFF position before, or right after, you shut your truck off, you'll get the described thump.
Also, if you turn the ignition to ON, but don't start the truck, you'll hear a groan from under the hood. That as well is normal, from what I gather and read, it's the ABS system thingamabob powering, or vac'ing, up.
I really appreciate this. This is so far from anything I had guessed and yet, hate to say it, but I think I was hunting in the wrong direction. This actually makes sense. I would welcome any other ideas, but I think I need to start paying attention to the position of the ac switch.
