390 Timming?
I just picked up a 76 ford with a 390 i think a 1966 motor. The guy i got it from told me it needs timming done. I was also told to to disable the vancuum advanced when adjusting the timming? Im new to timming so can i get some help? The guy that one time he didnt disconnect the vacuum advance and blew a motor!

Well, you can't blow a motor by checking the timing. Just can't happen. Warm the engine up to operating temp and disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose. Take a timing light and hook it up to the number 1 wire. Aim the light at the harmonic damper and pull the trigger. You will see where it is timied from there. Set it to about 12 degrees BTDC as displayed on the damper. Hook the vacuum line back up to the carb and your timing should not change. If it does then you have your idle set too high. If your idle is low and you still are pulling vacuum then you have other issues.
