94 explorer spark plug cables?

I recently bought a 94 Explorer XLT push rod 6, 2 WD. It seems to have been well taken care of, as the previous owner replaced the auto transmission, the air conditioner, and the power steering pump. I'd like to get new spark plugs and cables, and was wondering there are any high-performance cables that could be suggested. I'd rather they be the correct length, as oppoesed to me cutting them. Or should I stick with Ford's Motorcraft cables? Should I go with platinum plugs? Is the suggested gap in the manual the best setting?

Also, as I just turned 136,000 on the beast, I'm going in for a basic lube job. Are there any other things I should be doing at this point? Oil is changed every 3,000. I got new tires, and they are rotated every 3,000 miles.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Tim ,
I run Nascar Select series wires from Kragen on my 93 4.0L. As for plugs- I have had the best luck with the Motorcraft Platinum plugs(.055 Gap)
Change out your Air filter(go to K&N if you can afford it)
Clean the MAF sensor with Gumout carb cleaner
I'd change fluids in all the boxes while I was changing oil.
Put on a new sepentine belt also
Check all your U-joints
Repack the front wheel bearings

Larry,

Thanks. I'm changing the oil and doing a lube later this week. What do you mean by 'change the fluids in all of the boxes'? What boxes? I'm still new to the Explorer after 25 years of SAABs.

I'll also look into the Serpentine belt.

I would assume he means the trans and the dif oil

I would also change the antifreez and flush the cooling system. While you are at it replace the rad hoses. Replacing the heater core hoses on my 94 was a real pain as there is a bypass valve in line and it gets real brittle with age. I broke mine. teh good part was that it was only $20.00 from the dealer.

My first instinct is to tell you that if you don't know how to repack baring I would not recommend that you attempt the ball joints. I am not being mean or in anyway trying to flame you. I am always cautious about people getting into things that are part of the drive-line. These are critical components and making an error here can result in MUCH bigger problems. I also put brakes into this category.

Packing the barring is as simple. Once you get them out of the truck you get a hand full of grease and knead/force new grease into the bottom end of the barring by pressing the wider side of the barring into the palm of your hand where you have a ball of new grease. If you did not clean out the old grease it will force all the old dirty grease out of the top of the barring. Clean this off and through it away. If you cleaned the barring in solvent then keep forcing the grease into the barring until it comes out the other side.

This being said get a Chiltens manual and read up on this. Is it 2wd or 4wd?

Getting the whole thing apart and back together is not hard but there are some specific dos and don’ts that you must pay attention to.

Good Luck
