would a topper help ?

I was wondering if a topper ( shell ) would help with gas mileage on a superduty crewcab short box ( cab height ) I got 430 gears and 315x75x16 tires Fred

How much help are you looking to get?

Whats your mileage like now?

Seems that with those 34" tires and 4.30 gears you should be getting something in the neighbor hood of 9-10 City 12-14 Hwy.

Depends on which type of topper?

A topper will some usefulness of the truck, I carry motorcycles inside of my topper so I go a tall one. But I believe my tall one has reduced my mpg by 1 mpg or so. A cab high should raise it by 1 mpg or so (or so they say). Either way, there will be pro's and con's to a camper. For the most part I like mine, good luck.

I get about 11 mpg city and highway and on interstates 10 or less at 65 -70 miles per hour .. That is why Iam asking if a topper would help .. Now I am driving without the tailgate to see if that helps , it sure did when I drove a dodge 4x4 as much as 3 to 4 mpg .. The thing is it is nice tailgate on incase I have to haul anything THANKS FRED

would the weight of the topper counteract it's aerodynamics? I don't know - just asking....

You may want to consider a tonnue cover. Cleans up the aerodynamics of the bed, wieghs a lot less than a topper.

frederic,
Just curious about the lift or leveling kit you have to fit 315's and what rim size you are running?

I have a leveling kit from jc whitney it is tuff country . lifted the front 2 to 3 inches , the truck rides rougher but that is fine with me . I have 16x8 chrome sheel wheels but the offset is wrong and the tires rub on full turns ( there mounted so they are mine ) I am happy with the way it looks and drives anyway.. Took it to a ford dealer to adjust speedo ( $65 ) .. The V10 has the power and the trans doesn't down shift or any thing .. I was hoping with taller tires that it take some gear out of it and gain some mileage. FRED

I've got a 2001 Crew Cab LWB 4x4 with V-10 and 4.30 gears... Tires are stock and tranny is auto.

It has a Leer cab-high topper which looks good, provides cover, but didn't do a thing for mileage.

That leveling kit is just what i was looking to do on a F250. If you ever get a chance could you see what height your truck measures out to be? I know that is a pain in the but question but it would help me make a decision. Got any pictures?

From the floor to the fender lip on the front is 42 inches , from floor to fender lip on rear is 43.25 inches , from floor to top of cab at center post between the crewcab doors is 81 inches and this is with 250 lbs. of winter weight and no tailgate .. No I don't have pictures sense I got the tires and rims in late dec. I don't how to or have a scanner to sent them .. FRED

sinjin:

Check the Feb. 04 issue of trailer life. That issue has an article on pickup shells. A.R.E. and Gem Top both have models that might fit your needs.
