homebuilt lift?

Hey there,
I've got a good size shop, but have barely enough room for all my projects. My uncle recently passed away from cancer, my aunt and him losing most of what they own to medical bills. One of the few things she managed to hang on to is his 66 SS396 chevelle he bought new that only has 28K miles on it. I'm storing the car in my shop which means one of my projects sits outside. I have a 2 post rotary lift and use it all the time. I've been thinking about building a simple and cheap 4 post drive on lift that would let me stack 2 cars on top of each other. This would really help out right now with the chevelle and when it's gone I could stack one of my rigs on top. Anybody got any ideas for a cheap and simple drive on lift? I have an old 5 ton electric chain hoist, easy access to hydraulic motors and pumps and 3/8 aircraft cable and I can get steel for cheap new or hit the local rem yard.

You can buy them used fairly cheap on eBay or check with local garage equipment suppliers. By the time you buy a few parts new and used along with the steel you will probably have about as much invested (plus your time) in a lift with an unproven design and unknown lift capacity.

I got my rotary for free and rebuilt it. If I could find another deal like that I'd jump on it. I don't need all the features of a lift designed to allow access to the underside of the car. Also, lifts are not designed to hold a vehicle in the air for storage. What happens if an earthquake hits. My biggest expense would likely be paint in building this thing.

You can also get Dollys that go under the tires and you can push the car up against a side wall.

Why not build a well braced rack on some heavy casters and use your existing hoist to raise and lower the car? You may have to design it so once the car is raised, it can be assembled underneith and then the car is lowered onto it.

ONce it's up there, you could roll it to where you want and park another car under it.

You could even design it to support the frame and take the wiight off the suspension ant tires.
