I have some thermostat questions that I was hoping you guys could answer for me. First question: How often does a thermostat needs to be changed? Second question: I saw on another post here at the FTE site that a 195 degree thermostat is better than a 180 degree thermostat. The post said the higher thermostat was better for "efficiency and mileage." Is this true? If so, why is the higher thermostat better? Thanks.
BigMackZack, thermostats can be fickle items. One can work great for 20 years and the next one may last a week. I wouldn't worry about changing one until you have a problem.
Use a 180 themostat in a engine that calls for a 180 and a 195 in one that calls for it. Putting a 180 in one that calls for a 195 will not let the engine warm up as it was designed to do resulting in the engine running rich and wasting fuel.
