I can't tell what kind of wiring harness I need for my 99-explorer sport. I do not believe it has the towing package as it doesn't have a receiver hitch on it. It does have a place in the bumper for a ball though. My question is: How do I know which wiring kit to install? My explorer has drops behind each taillight with plugs that are capped off. None of the easy connect kits (hopper) have the correct fittings for an explorer with out the towing package and the one that fits a explorer with a towing package only connects to one side of the truck. This truck has 4:10 gears and a five speed automatic transmission. And yes the mileage sucks. I don't mind spending the 35 bucks for the non-towing package equipped kit but I don't want to cut wires when I don't need to.
I'm also going to install a receiver hitch.
You can go to any of you local parts house and find a kit they even sell them at walmart here but you can also try uhaul the movin trucks up here they do trailer hitchs and all that good stuff
i had the same problems with the boys 93 they make like 3 differnt kits for it i just got made and took it to the uhaul dealer in my area and they werid it in it cost me like 65 dollars when all said and done that could be somthing to think about
Stay a way from uhaul, they will sell you there hitches and wiring but you can not tow there trailers if you have an explorer. They have ban the explorer. Check your local trailer parts supplyer for the wiring they should have it on the shelf.
No one wants to deal with explorers these days... I've had trouble finding places that would even mount my tires when I got rims because they knew it was going on an exploder.
Let us know where you get the kit and for how much.
I had purchased it at U-Haul about 2 months ago. Last month I noticed the trailer lights didnt work, so I had U-Haul check the module. And aparently it broke, you could see where there was a short in the module because it was a bit burnt, like it exploded from the inside. Now the same thing happens, the trailer lights dont work, but the module is still intact. I hardly trailer at all, so I dont think its a short on the trailer. I just dont see how this wiring harness and module can keep breaking. I am tempted to have the Ford dealer install it, but I know they will charge an arm and a leg. On top of that, I will have to make sure U-Haul gives me my money back from the original installation.
What years did Uhaul bend the explor my son just rented a moving trailer from them not to long ago and his is a 91. The one and yes explors to have anything done is kind of hard depends on were you live I guess not sure why they wouldn't want to put the tires on your trk for you. Also i have dealed with uhaul for wlot of things and yes i well say they have had there problems that they have done on friends and familys trks and cars and i have heard people have the same problem with them wiring up lights and they tried to get there money back and didn't have any luck at all but i have never had a problem with them.
Well the problem is solved. I went to O'Reilly Auto Parts and bought Hoppy kit # 40315 for $35.00. Man is it sweet. It has the power converter with it. The whole unit mounts behind the left taillight. There are pigtails that you plug in where the original plugs go for the lights and then you plug in the original plugs into the pigtails. You run one pigtail to the right side light and repeat the process. You then run a hot wire to the battery, which also has a fused link so, you can't burn up your lights. Running the power wire from the back to the front took the longest time. Unit hooked right up with no problems.
