My 92 explorer Serpentine belt is going i can see its cracked and needs to be replaced, i dont have the time to do it myself and am concerned it will brake leaving me stranded on the side of the road, and i was wondering what a good price is to pay to have one installed along with a new tensoner, i do have ac if that makes a difference
This repair takes about 10 minutes and the routing is on fan guard. The cost of the belt is about $25. You'll pay for an hour of labor if you don't do it yourself. Last time I changed one it used a 1/2"ratchet to compress the tensioner and it was over in less than 10 minutes. Much better than the old way of having to loosen the alternator and then re-tighten. BTW-how did your tensioner go bad?
Eric
It took me about 10 minutes with a ratchet also and I have a 94 explorer. One suggestion would be to go at it from the bottom. It's much easier to reach the tensioner from underneath.
i dont know the tensioner is bad just thought you needed to replace it with the belt guess not......if its that fast i might attempt it myself, how would i go about putting the new one on start from the bottom to the top?? is there any streching or can it just be done by hand and then you tighten the tensioner? and its all tight?? i would assume you would remove the air tub to get that out of the way
No stretching needed. Put a ratchet on the tensioner and push it out of the way (be careful though - it's on a spring and wants to snap back). With the tensioner pushed out of the way, slide the old belt off. Then just slide the new belt on. You might want to draw yourself a diagram before you you start, just to be sure. I'd start at the top and work the new belt on from there down. It's easier to reach the tensioner from the bottom, so that is the last part of the belt that you want to slide on. It's really not hard at all.
