I have a 92 F250 extended cab 4X4 with a 7.3 litre diesel (international). This truck has almost been completely rebuilt (literally)and it has had 3 transmissions in it. The last one is the same transmission for a 1997 (supposedly). What started it all was the OD light that flashed occasionally. It doesn't do it all the time. It does sometimes when backing up on an incline or towing a trailer. The last transmission has been checked and it is fine. However the light still flashes occasionally. When we took it in the last time they couldn't get it to do it after 10 days. They hooked it up on a readout machine and the guy said that it was probably a speed sensor module that wasn't getting the correct information to tell the transmission when to shift. But they didn't replace it, because they couldn't get a "definate" readout identifying the problem. It has a new driveshaft put in also. Can anyone help me or has had a similar problem? I have too much money tied up in it to get rid of it, and sooner or later it will be practically brand new!
thank you for the reply - supposedly they checked everything. They also stated that they replaced the "overdrive sensor", but it still does it. I have it in now to do yet another "complete" diagnostic and asked them to do a complete one on the CPU like you suggested. Hopefully this will show something. After picking it up last Friday, it did it 3 times but it could go a month and not do it. I am wondering just where the speed sensors are located? and if there is one on the drive shaft. The shaft was replaced and I am wondering if a sensor was put back on if one indeed goes there. Thanks again for your suggestion. I love the truck. This site is great! I have been reading the messages and have learned a lot.

There is no such thing as an "overdrive sensor."
When the light flashes is it a steady flash? If there is an error code set it will flash on for 1/2 second, and off for 1/2 second. If there is a wiring problem that is grounding the wire for the light it will flash randomly. It's not uncommon for the wire to the light to rub through the insulation and make the light flash.
You might want to buy a code reader. One for your truck should cost about $25. When the light flashes you could run the test right then and find the code.
When you are backing and the light flashes have you been backing and manuevering for a while? The light will flash if the transmission overheats, and it isn't that hard to overheat a transmission when towing or backing a trailer.
