Hello I recently purchased a 88 ranger with a 2.9 auto. The guy I bought it off of said it was running but it wouldn't stay running unless you kept your foot on the gas. He said it was the ignition module on the back of the dis. Well I replaced it and still have no spark, I then replaced the dis. cap and rotor, and it will spark only one time when I crank it over. I don't know what else to do.
have you checked the pick coil and ignition coil if they are ok i would also look at the wiring maybe corroded, broken, ect. without seeing it first hand i'd start there at least it don't cost you anything to check
Did you check the timing? Also look for vacuum leaks. Getting back to the basics you need fuel, air, spark and compression. Once you determine that all those things are there, you can work on the details.
Today someone looked at it, and they said on the side of the fuel injector towards the front there is an idle throttle something like that, that mounts there and plugs in, they said if that wasn't on there it would not run, does anyone know about this.
Is he saying that the idle air control valve is missing (bolts to the side of the upper intake manifold)? If it's missing, it would introduce a major vacuum leak, as well as eliminating the computer's ability to control the idle. What exactly did he say was missing?
I'm not certain if it would cause a no start, but I imagine that kind of vacuum leak might make it difficult to start. Not to mention the computer would have no way of controlling the idle so the idle would be sky high.
forgivve me had a beer or 2but a vaccum leak on a FI engine does not react the same as a carburated engine the o2sensor will read lean and puter will enrich in the the end you still get poor economy
So what rudiger66ca......its till wont idle right with no IAC.....if it all. A vacuum leak of that magnitude would cause horrible drivability issues uf ut ran at all
The idle air control valve is the silver canaster looking thing on the left side of the upper intack. If it is not there or the truck will run bad.
The throttle control sencer is the little black thing on the left side of the intake right behind the air tube.If it is not there or bad or unplug {bad wires }truck will NOT RUN.I hope this helped.
Sorry I dont have a better picture.
no kidding your missing parts and it won't work i was talking about a bad gasket eg a plentum gasket any but any way reading the thread again "Well I went and put a new coil on it and it still doens't fire." sorry for responding on a off topic

lol garyranger4x4 anyway let's get back to johnyrabbits problem cause that is what this forum is about. when you are cranking are you getting a steady spark (take the distributor end of the wire from the coil and lay it on the engine) while crankingyou should see it sparking (sorry if i over simplified) hreed said it best start with the simple
