My truck has 220,000 miles on it. I know that these motors should be able to go to 300,000 with love - and this motor has been very well maintained and those 220,000 miles are almost ALL highway miles. To my question...the other day I saw an advertisement in the DM Register in the classifieds that somebody was selling a 300 L6 with 70,000 miles out of a 92 F150 wrecked for 100 bucks. If I should see an ad like this again, should I jump on it and buy it? How much would you guys pay for a used motor? The 300 in my truck feels like my friends much lower mileage 300..so would it be worth it. Even more importantly, what price would I look for on a used motor.
If you are going to buy a used 4.9L, be sure and take off the water pump and look at the cylinder wall behind it, to see if it's broke.
If a Ford truck with a 4.9L is hit hard in the front, the water pump shaft is usually pushed backwards into the cylinder wall, and cracks/breaks the cylinder.
I was recently shopping for a used motor, and discovered a lot of them with broken cylinders.
