Worked on the shift motor on my 86 tonight. Got the 4X4 working for one pass and that was it. Won't engage anymore. Relays are clicking. I think the motor itself needs to be replaced. Does anyome have a source for those?
You can go through Ford nad pay BIG $$$ for it or check your local junkyard for one.You might take your off the T case take it apart and clean it good.,if that is not what you have already done,Also check all the wire conections.
I have taken the shift motor a part and cleaned the communtator segments and brushes with 400 grit emory cloth. Tested it without bolting it up and it works. I'll be trying it in the dirt tomorrow. It seems the armature shaft has problems turning so making sure the electrical connection within the motor was cleaned did the trick.
I finally got it working. It seemed like the motor was jamming up when it was bolted up. So, I installed flat washers between the shift motor and transfer case. Now she works with no problems. Took it out today in soft beach sand, man she's a go getter and flat out cooks in low range. I almost don't want to sell it now. Thanks for the input.
Very funny, I drive 60 miles per day to work and back. I just don't think I need a 4X4. I have a Crown Vic sitting here, a prior police cruiser that has lots of potential. So, my attention will go to that. As for the Bronco it's listed in the Classifieds.
