I think it's pretty hard to get as large as Wal-Mart and not make a few enemies along the way. Among other accomplishments, they are the largest retailer and grocer in the world. Their stores are full of people that publically denounce them and privately shop in them. They didn't get that big without a LOT of help.
The things i buy at Wal-mart are the things i used to buy in the downtown area. Most of those places are gone now.I can honestly say if i can find it elsewhere i do so.People on limited income have to shop there.look around the first couple of days of the month.check out the older shopers. It's hard to compete with their prices.I dont know of anyone who doesn't go thetre occasionaly, including myself.I don't enjoy shopping there.I do it out of necessity.
There is a reason you have to do it out of necessity. Because Wal Mart can give you what you want for less. That's why they are the biggest retailer in the world. My wife and I own a "mom and pop" in Alaska. Fred Meyer is getting ready to move in and take over. I am concerned that we will be gone because of it, but I am hoping we can compete. Prices aren't the final determining factor. Customer service is more important, and we try to provide that. If Freddy puts me out of business, I can only assume I did not provide the service that was expected. I have seen many small stores close the doors, but I think it is because they were not able or willing to take on the challenge. The big stores will not go away. If you are really serious about supporting the local economy, buy appropriately.
The majority of people in my town have been fighting to keep a super Wal Mart from being built here for the past 3 years me along with them . The web sites about this predatory company are no exagerration. Check out their labor practices and destruction of small town bussiness diversity. When Wal Mart comes in nearly every other independent bussiness is eliminated. That means friends and neighbors losing their source of income and money being vacumned out of the community and sent off to corporate head quarters in Bentonville Ark. More and more communitys around the country are successfuly keeping Walmarts out of their towns and for good reason. Any time I can avoid spending my money in a big box store and instead patronise a local independent I do.
I think if your small town is already a ghost town with little left intact then by all means bring in Wal Mart ( my home town in New England falls in this catagory ) but if your town is still a viable community with most of it's small town culture intact you may want to think twice about letting Mego-Lo Mart in.
Many people think that Walmart is so much cheaper than other stores, but really they are not. I work in the Electronics dept, so I was looking in the ads in our Sunday paper today. I was looking at the Best Buy ad and noticed that they had about 10-15 items in there that were the same price as us, if not lower than us. I have noticed this several other times too. I have even went into stores like Best Buy just to look around and compare their prices to ours. There really is no difference. Of course there were some items that were more than others like certain brands that they carry that we don't, but overall they were pretty close.
EDIT: TLD, I just noticed that the title says "Wak Mart Haters."

I tend to try and support the mom and pops ( what few are left ) You go to wally world and you get what you pay for. One of the ways they sell cheaper is by not stocking things except in the busiest part of the selling season. Try going there in January and finding your kid a new pair of gloves, sorry come back next year. Same with RV antifreeze. Ten pallets come in and when they are gone that's it.
My wife and kids think God lives in that store somewhere. I go only out of necessity.
And now we have the Home Depot pushing out our smaller local lumberyards and hardware stores. Home Depot is just a guy thing version of Mal-Wart. I do go in the Eagle and H.D. just to get my $10 certificate when they don't have what I want. The last time was for a hatchet handle. The salesman tried real hard to sell me one for a California framing hammer but the poll is backward. He was rather peeved when I told him it wasn't the right thing and I wanted my $10. Same with Hyde Glue. They were sure they had something that was just as good but couldn't really offer any proof, $10

The economy and the type of store you have in your community is dependent upon you. The Wal Marts, Fred Meyers, Safeways, et al. will always show up if there is a market. That's why they are in business! Just don't rag on the big store's coming into your town and wondering why the smal stores go out of business when you go buy something for 10c less. It depends on what you want in your town.
your boycotts are very noble to support the mom & pops,,, but guess what i go to Wal-mart whenever possible,, Im a Self Employed one man business but Ill go to Wal Mart because i want to save money & it does save money,, i get Those Welfare Pizza's (totinos party pizza) for 98 Cents each,, the **** Grocery stores in the rural local area want $1.75 for the same thing,, F-THAT!,,
Wal mart once was a small business which succeeded in the world ,, now people hate them for bring the biggest.

well I feel REALLY strongly about this. Walmart is able to sell things like cloths cheaper because the quality of goods and because all they hire highschoolers and old retired people, who dont care much about making a "living". By "living" i mean enough to support a family, with things like provided health care that doesnt cost half of your wage. When you go there, ask if they have a specific movie in stock, or where if they can check on something in the back for you. The customer service sucks. or go in the stoor wearing a "ufcw" (united food and comercial worker union) and count how long it takes for the bigwigs to kick you out. There is a new Super Walmart in the next town where I live. There is another one opening in the same town not 15 miles away. how many do we need? when they are the only game left in town, they will jack up the prices, and/or pack up there toys and leave. leaving the economy of the town in utter dissarray. The safeways in the tri city area(Prescott, Prescott Valley, And Chino Valley, in arizona) of which there are four, fired 10 percent of their employees in each store when Walmart opened its doors, now to compete with the prices of walmart the safeways and frys and all other establishments where the employees are UFCW are arguing with the unions over healthcare, wages and the like. Walmart is the source of all of this, they have gotten rich off the backs of their employees. I boycot Walmart at all costs, please help me in my efforts and continue to shop in places where the workers are paid a fare wage and have adequate health care provided for them. The residence in California Know exactly what Im talking about, for the UFCW strikers have not been to work sence november 2003. all those lost wages, and the expence of living there. wow, I cant imagine. If you live in a state where there IS striking going on, honor those strikers and help them battle for their fair wages. This is NOT 1920 anymore. workers deserve more than this.
