Dyno question

First off, if this is in the wrong forum please move. Now, as we all know, 1 ft/lb is equil to hanging a 1lb weight exactly 1 foot out from the pivit point. On a chassis dynometer, how do they calibrate it to measure rotational torque from the rear tires? Exactly how does the dyno measure torque? Just a question that's been driving me nutzo.

Typically the braking mechanism of the dyno will be mounted on a beam connected to a load cell. The load cell measures the force applied to it & the length of the beam does not change. Then it's just a matter of doing the math.

Cheers,
Eric

All,
The old dynos used a water pumping system that measured flow which could be directly related to pump work, this in turn, could be converted to HP. I'm not sure how these new fandangled dynos are doing it.
