I believe what Scouder was referring to was that if the carb is set at the right fuel mix to run when warm, it will be too lean to run well when the engine is cold. I have had good luck running the choke plate slightly modified. I cut off the lower corners at an angle to allow more air in, it allows the high idle to work without flooding the engine from the blocked airflow. If the engine is running lean enough for max power it should be difficult to keep running when cold without the assistance of the choke and high idle cam. IMHO
That is a good point Putt. That may explain my carb issues. I have the choke set as lean as possible and it still floods. Maybe I can lower my high idle a bit. It will idle at about 3,000rpm when warm and the high idle is on.
It works really well because it allows you to pull the choke all the way on to "set" the fast idle, but it prevents excess fuel from flowing. Holley's don't need much extra fuel when starting! My truck starts right up no matter how cold it gets- like -22*! BRRRR!
