I know it takes 5 quarts of oil. The timing should be computer controlled. Its probably not something that you should be faced with. I would be more suspect of your timing chain, how many miles are on the engine?
Thanks for the info so far.
For timing, if it's computer controlled, that would be great, but on my '85 MR2, it needs to be adjusted after adding a new cap & rotor by rotating the distributor until the timing is at roughly 10 degrees past TDC (I can't remember if it's 10 or 11 right now). That's what I meant by timing.
There was also a diagnostic terminal that had to be jumpered to set the timing, so that the computer wasn't trying to interfere...
The odo reads a little over 37 thousand. I can not verify 100k or 200k over that...
It was duped at a repair shop after the owner elected not to pay for some work. I got it cheap enough that the mileage really didn't matter much. (It runs, it drives, it'll haul stuff to the dump when needed.) $700. It also needs shocks, but that can wait a while longer.
I just needed specs so I can do the tune-up before the Haynes I have on order arrives.
Welcome to FTE Often there is a label on the radiator core support with timing and gap info. If it's missing, Schucks should be able to give you the gap. BTW, why not drive down to Schucks and see if they have the manual for the truck; if so and if it's unwraped (most seem to be), just look up the info if you don't want to wait.
Yeah i did that before i got my haynes manual. I went to advance auto and "found" a book for my truck that was unwrapped. I could have bought it then, but i already knew i was getting one for christmas.
Well, I did go into shucks, and asked. Gap is .44"
It ran, but not well. Now it runs MUCH better - at least one plug wire was fubared - contact stayed on the plug. That plug was wet with fuel, also, so it was definitely not firing. All plugs were black with soot, but that could be from having been sitting for 2+ years as much as anything.
I'll have to check timing some other time, but it's running much smoother now.
I did check the books out at a couple of parts stores, no '84 Ranger books.
Funny, I never thought of looking in the glovebox until I had it finished - the owners manual is actually in it!
