I am having a problem in my 90 EFI 4.9 Liter. The dipstick pushes out about a half inch every time I drive it. It has also started leaking oil from the sidepan above the oil filter and maybe the rear seal. I changed the PVC valve and all the hoses look ok. I don't burn any oil and the engine seems strong otherwise.
I haven't checked the vacuum yet. I do notice a rattle like piston slap when I start it, but that may be normal. It is cold here in Minnesota and I don't drive it very much. It may sit for three or four days. I am using 5w30 and a wix oil filter.
Anyone have any idea what else could be causing a positive crankcase pressure? I hope my rings aren't bad. It has 143k on it and I have all the maintenance records. I had expected this engine to last well past 200k.
Get a compression tester and check the compression. I have an 85 that started doing the same thing, it does not burn any oil yet the crankcase pressure was forcing oil out of every gasket surface. Ran the compression check and #3 was less than half the rest. Personally I think I have a hole in th episton but have decided to swap engines. If this is your case I have the name and number of a motor supply down here in NC (actually it is in VA) where I am going to get a reman 4.9 for $805.00 delivered. Good luck, I hope yours is not self destructing the way mine did!!
Thanks. I have a compression tester. It is below zero this morning, but it started ok. Maybe I will test it this afternoon if I feel like freezing in the garage.
I just check my compression and all six are all around 165 psi with less than 5 psi difference. I also checked the vacuum at the pvc and there is plenty. That is good news, but I am still stumped. Maybe I should check to see if the dipstick is bumping into something. I know I need new motor mounts and the engine is moving more than it should right now.
