starter won't engage

I have a 1993 f350 with a 7.3 turbo diesel and am having troubles getting it to start. When I turn the ignition on all the right lights come on including the wait to start. When I turn the key to start the starter won't engage. If I short out the solenoid under the hood with the ignition on the truck starts right up. I thought that it might be a problem with the solenoid so I replaced it. Still no start.

there is another solenoid on the starter itself.just something to try, lightly smack the solenoid with a hammer, probably just stuck.if that works that means the little disk in the solenoid is burnt and not making contact all the time.you didnt crank on the thing for a long time by chance and get the starter hot?not sure but you should be able to buy the solenoid seperate from the starter itself,if its the problem.

If its starting when you jump it on the sol on the fender like you said then it has to be a problem between the key and the sol.The small wire on the sol(the one thats pushed on over a small pin). There has to be a break in this wire or your ignition switch is bad. These rigs are known for problems with the ignition switch.an actuator rod in the steering column breaks or goes out of place.Thats where i would start. If its starting when you jump the fender sol it has to be up stream from that sol eliminating everything after that sol.(ie starter.sol on starter.wire fron that sol to starter.)Hope this helps.

And since the lights and glow plugs come on when you turn the key to on I would start looking at the switch, then the wire from the switch to the fender solenoid.
Look at the wire (the small wire) color out by the solenoid and then see if you have that wire attached to the under dash switch. If you are getting current there either you have corosion or a broken wire. If no current under dash then your switch is bad.

I checked the switch and it seems to be good. Then I ran a wire from the starter switch(red with blue stripe) to the fender solenoid now the truck starts up fine. Before I go about rewiring anything I would like to know if there are any fuses or relays or anything like that between the starter switch and the fender solenoid. Its pretty hard to actually trace the wire from the solenoid to the switch and I don't have a wiring diagram.
Thanks for the help

There are none that I know of.

You might use a ***** type circuit tester and have someone turn the key while you probe the connector and the end of the wire out by the solenoid to see if it is just a bad connector on the original wire.

I thought that it might be a bad connector on the wire so I stripped the wire back and tried the connection just down from the plug and it worked fine. I guess I will just have to run a new wire. Any ideas appreciated. thanks for the info,

If you were out by the solenoid when you did that you can just repair that end of the wire. A little solder and heat shrink tubing with an eyelet connector and you are back in business. You can get a couple of nuts (10-24 I think) to fit the post on the solenoid and connect that way.

If it was not the wire- next time remember the ignition switch that is actuated by the rod can be adjusted (two nuts on column, have to drop column) by loosening the nuts and sliding the switch up and down the column- becareful, if you get 'start' then you might loose 'ignition' if you go too far- that kinda deal. (for future reference- starting issues)
