Neutral RPMs at 60MPH
When driving along at "crusing speeds" of 40 MPH or higher and in third gear (overdrive or not) if I take my foot off the gas the engine does not stay engaged with the trans. Although I am rolling along at, say, 55 MPH, my tach will register 800 RPMs. If I try to accellerate, I step on the gas and the RPMs "catch up" to the car's speed and only then will I get power to the wheels.
ALSO, when engaging the cruise control, as long as I am on level ground or going uphill, all is just fine. However, as soon as I start to go downhill it's as though the car is in neutral and it speeds along and exceeds/ignores whatever the cruise control is set to.
This only happens in 3rd gear...over drive or not does not matter...4WD or not does not matter.
Note that all this started to happen AFTER we had the trans and transfer case rebuilt a few months ago. I am sure it is related to this rebuild and am going to take it back to the shop but want to sound intelligent about why this is happening when I am discussing this with the mechanic (so I am turning to this forum for ideas).
Thank you all!
