What would true duals sound like on a V10. Run 3inch pipes through high flow cats and Flowmaster 70 series mufflers with a crossover tube. Haven't heard of anyone trying this. Thought maybe the 70's would quieten it down a little and still allow max flow. Just a thought. Found something like this on a web site but they wasn't clear as to what they did. Check it out!

Thanks

Besides being illegal (can't add the second cat), I think it would sound kind of "ricey"- imagine two 5-cylinder engines. IMO a split after the muffler would sound more mellow... if that's the sound you are going for.

I don't plan on doing this, just saw this on the website above and was wondering what it would sound like. I am happy with my 40 series flow.

Thanks

Is it really illegal to go from one cat to two? Hmph, I did not know this. Why is that? I was also thinking about going to a true dual exhaust with basically the same type of setup. But now I'm going to need to do some more asking around about this. Thanks, Nomo, for sharing that info.
But my other question is the sound. Wouldn't a crossover tube connecting the 2 sides balance the sound of 10 cyl? I don't think it would sound like 2 5 cyl engines if it had an X or H pipe.
So my last question is.....How do I do a true dual exhaust? If I can't add another cat, then how do I seperate the left and right sides? I really like the idea of the old fashioned dual exhaust. If the only way to do it is after the cat, then I'll just keep my Gibson.
Thanks again for your help.

You know, the more I think about it the more interesting it sounds. If only there was a way of doing it without spending all the money up front. As far as the cats go, I don't have to worry about it here. Where I live, there isn't any checking of any kind. Heck, you can even remove the cat without getting caught.

Now the questions:
1 What is the difference between the "X" and the "H" crossover tubes?
2 How do you determine where they should be placed within the system?
3 What about the O2 sensor?
4 What do you do with the smog pump tube?

Help with these questions and I might take the plunge and be the guinea pig. All I am doing is looking for an excuse to change my flowmaster 40 series anyway.

Thanks

Here's what I know
1. I think the shape determines the amount of backpressure allowed in the system. H being more than X
2. The crossover should be placed in tune with the engine. There is a pulse generated by the exhaust. This pulse is bounced back to the engine by the crossover. The pulse coming out and the one going back should be equal.
3. In my friend's 99 Cobra, they simply welded the threaded ports into the new pipes in the stock location. That way, the sensors could be replaced easily as stock.
4. Never heard of it. Sorry.

Well there ya go. Time to make that appointment. Can't wait to HEAR the results.
BTW, I finally heard my Gibson cat back from outside while my friend drove the truck up the street. WIMPY!! I was so disappointed. The temptation is mounting. Which mod first?! Oh the agony.
Good luck with your decision.

First, altering the emissions system is a violation of Federal law. Although, as you (and I) have experienced, not all areas are checked.

1. The cross-over pipe is installed to balance pressure between the pipes in order to better evacuate the exhaust pulses (NOT to increase backpressure). The "X" design is better because of the angles & because of the increased common area between the pipes.
2. As was mentioned before, the ideal place is determined by calculating exhuast flow based on a number of criteria. For us common guys, I've always heard it best to install the cross-over as close to the manifolds as possible.
3. Torch a hole in the pipe & weld the O2 sensor "nut" onto it.
4. Smog pump? My truck didn't have one.

Duh Maybe I should have checked before I ASSumed there was a smog pump. Ok guys, I am going to check out a few shops and see what I can find out. I'll let you know how much and whether or not I am going to play the guinea pig.

Thanks

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Jul-02 AT 10:17 PM (EST)]An old trick for finding the cross over point for a single tube
cross over pipe.

Set up the duals
Paint the pipes for a few feet from the headers down the pipe.
Drive around in the way and places you plan to.
Find the first spot on each pipe where the paint burns off first.
Weld the tube between those spots.

are you planning on putting headers on as well, or just sticking to the stockers?- I plan to eventually put headers, dual cats and exhaust w/a crossover too.
