i just got a 2000 v6 for my vehical to exchange the one that slung a load of bearings. i don't wanna mix synthetic and reg. oil together and gunk it up. i don't know what kind of oil was being use in the motor from the rolled car. is there any way to tell syn. from reg. oil just by looking or what. how can i flush the motor out
Both synthetic and conventional oils are completely compatible. Without the aid of an oil lab, there isnt' a reliable way to tell the difference just by looking at them. No need to do a flush. Just drain the old oil, replace the filter and refill with your favorite brand.
All major brand oils are required by spec(I think the API) to be compatible. That doesn't mean mixing oils would be optimum. Most of us prefer to use one brand and stick with it to make absolutely sure the additive pacakges give us the full benefit.
It is safe to mix oils and you will not gunk things up, at least over the short (<50K miles) haul.
Just drain the old oil, and add your new oil and filter and be happy.
