1996 f150, xlt, 4x4, 59K miles, 6 cyl....automatic....appears in the picture in excellent condition, does anyone know how the automatic transmissions are on these trucks assuming this truck hasn't been worked too hard? Would I be better off with the stick if I'm going to be towing a trailer approx. 3000? Also, the dealer is asking $8,950, probably could get it for close to 8G, is that a good deal assuming the truck is in good shape?
Towing, you will want the automatic, M5OD is weak transmisson when it comes to towing and unfortuantly is the only manual offered in the half ton models 93 and up.
That dosen't sound like an unreasonable price, you might check out Kelly Blue Book for a good estimate.
acerockola77, thanks, just what I wanted to hear. I knew that once I had read that one of the transmissions was not the best, i just couldn't remember which one. thanks for the reply.
also check out edmunds.com i'd look it up and then print out the info. that could be used to talk the price down. i have the 4.9 6cyl w/manual tranny and no problems w/power. i like manual for the gas mileage but the auto's are nice. i wouldn't turn down a good truck just because it doesn't have the tranny i want.

If you "must" have a stick, all you need is a flywheel, a different neutral switch, a clutch pedal and hydralic assembly, and the ZF transmission found in the same year range in the F250/350 series.
Its a much stronger transmission and your truck will rust away around it before it goes <grin>.
I have 177K on my truck and the ZF tranny, and the transmission is fine. The rest of the truck, well, you know how that goes <G>
