I have an 88 F-150 4x2 with a 302. It also has dual tanks but I haven't been running off the front tank because I'm having stalling problems off that tank. The original tanks for my truck are supposed to hold 71 liters but mine only hold 45. I've only been getting anywhere from 110 - 250 kilometers on a tank! I might as well set my wallet on fire.

I have a 91 F-150 with the 302 and I get just under 10 miles to the gallon. My back tank rotted out so I can only use the front one, I'm not sure how much it can hold.

If you mesuare the wheel base, the guy at the dealership parts counter can tell you the tank capacities. Yea, really, it worked for me.

The manual for my 1988 F150 4 x 2, 302, AOD, 3.55 axle extended cab has the dual tank capacities as 72 litres for one and 69 for the other (I can't remember which was front/back tank). 72 litres is about 19 U.S. gallons.
My mileage is about 16 miles per gallon on the highway, and about 13 miles per gallon in the city. I think that is about average from what I have read on this site in recent months.

There's a couple things you have to know (engine/transmision/rear gears) to know what gas mileage you should be getting.

I have the 88 F-150 4X4 with the 302 & E4OD tranny & no mods.

I get right around 12.5 miles to a gallon with it including ofroad miles when I tested. I also had a leaking front tank when I did mine.

The best way to figure your correct fuel milage is to fill your tanks & write down your odometer reading. Drive until you need gas again. Fill your tanks & this time write down your odometer readings & the amount of gallons you put in to fill.

subtract odometer readings to calucate accurate driven miles.

Substract miles from amount of gallons.
in example...
400 miles driven
18.791 gallons to refill
400 divided by 18.791 = 21.28
you are you are getting 21 mpg.

This will give you the correct fuel milage for your truck & driving habits.

My 88 F-150 4x2 w/302 and AOD tranny, 3.55 gears gets about 14 in town and 16 on the highway. Pretty disappointing considering the weak power output of the 302.

Although neighbor has a new Ranger with 4.0 and auto and all he gets is 17 on the highway - maybe I'm not losing out all that much.

We will see what headers and dual exhaust will do for her this spring....

'94 F-150 regular cab long bed 4x4, 302, E4OD, 3.55, stock
Front tank 17, rear tank 16, I think the E4OD and transfer case leave less room for the front tank.

Highest 16, empty, LA-San Diego, no A/C
Lowest 10, off road with camper

How can it be that the new Ranger in the post above only gets about 17 miles per gallon, which is about the same as we are talking about for the older F150, when the Ranger is newer and takes advantage of the latest technology? Any ideas?

91 f-150 5.0 5sp man w/4.10, i put a dyno max turbo muffler, summit shorty headers, i have 35" tires. it runs beautifully, it has around 200,000 miles so it has a little puff of smoke when i shift but it doesnt burn oil like crazy or anything. i have replaced almost all the normal sensors, egr, tps, pcv etc. and i still get about 9.5 miles to the gallon most all the time city, freeway, off-roading, anything. is this normal for my gear ratio/tire size/engine/and tranny configuration? also i cant maintain freeway speeds when going up hills. could this be a clogged cat? my back one was removed before i bought the truck so it only has the front one. please help!
