3 spd tranny problem
But those usually just make a grinding noise. Shouldn't make much difference between gears. If you really have a piece banging around inside the tranny, it'll soon find it's way into a gear tooth and lock things up tight.
To change the TO bearing, pull the bell housing back and slip the old one off the input shaft of the tranny and install a new one.
'Course, this is easier said than done - but still not the worst repair you will find.
Good luck - email me if you need specific info on procedure.
Much as I like flatheads I wouldn't put one in a later rig unless you're feeling really creative and wanted to drive something nobody else has.
They are dependable - I drove my '48 pickup to Youngstown, Ohio in '01 for my parent's 50th anniversary party. It's also been to Spokane,Washington, Lethbridge, AB Canada, Denver,Colorado, Boise,Idaho, etc. in the past 3 years.
They are also maintenance intensive. You have to actually maintain them on a regular basis - not like today's plastic trucks.
Points, chassis lube, lube distributor, fan hub and generator, make sure you have the right amount of deflection in both Vbelts or your waterpupmps/generator/fan bearings will fail. You have to keep a toolbox with you and pay attention to what unusual sounds your truck has been making and keep the replacement parts with you for roadside repairs.
And you need to like nostalgia, curious and puzzled onlookers, the faint taste of motor oil on your lips after a long drive, but especially the sound of a flathead V8 thru dual Smithy's and straight pipes. I don't want to drive anything else.
