Its best to have the complete donor vehicle.
Its not really hard, but if you aren't very mechanically inclined, I suspect you are, or you wouldn't be asking, it can be very diffcult.
The biggest problem is that you might need to have your driveshaft(s) resized.

its not hard at all. When I did mine, I put the yoke up in the transmission and slid it back out about 1 1/2" the n measured from there to the rear end. I went to the wrecking yard and picked up a shaft the right length for $25 dollars, added new u joints and bolted it in. Any other questions that I can help you with, feel free to ask. I went from 4 speed to c6 and back to 4 speed. Im thinking about going from a 390 to a 460. If I do, I'll be going back to c6, (thats what the engine comes with).
