hi, i have a 73' factory high-boy and im haveing some wireing problems. i had to replace the steering collum harness because it was fried and my blinkers didn't work. after i got the new one in, my blinkers worked for about a week and then they quit and i cand figure out why. ive checked the fuses and still cant find whats wrong with it. anybody have any ideas?
The turnsignal switch/column area is rather complex, with several different circuits mixed in. That's why we need specific info on what exactly is working, and what is not. If you give us all this info, we might be able to pin-point the possible problem area.
If you hear the flasher clicking under the dash, you have power to the flasher.
I don't have a diagram for a 73 to get the wire colors to help you test. But it sounds like the turnsignal switch is bad.
Let's focus on the brake light that does not work.
Find the color of the wire that leaves the brake light switch. This wire will be sending power from the brake switch, to the turn signal switch.
When the turn signal switch is in the middle position, the brake switch power is fed into the turnsignal switch, and then out to the two seperate wires feeding each brake light. If you have a diagram, you will know what the colors of the wires are leaving the turn switch, and you can test them for voltage at the column.
With the turnsignal switch in the middle position, and the brake pedal depressed, you should have 12 volts on both wires leaving the switch, going to the brake lights.
If you find you are lacking voltage on one of the brake light wires, you might want to wiggle the lever a little bit to see if you get voltage. You may also want to check your connectors in the column, if you get voltage out of the switch, but not in the rest of the harness going to the rear.
yeah i know there are 2 flasher relays. i havent worked on it much because im in school during the day and when i'm not in school i'm working but i'm going to work on it today for a bit
