Timing Changes

1990 FORD F250 4.9 6 CYL.

Three weeks ago my truck started missing while under load.
Went to start the truck one morning, no luck. It acted as if
it had jumped time. (fuel & fire to motor but would not run)
I changed the control module & reset timing - truck ran great.
Past few days it started missing again - went to start the truck
yesterday, no luck. I retarded timing a bit and it starts and
runs fine. Why would the timing change on it's own? Would
this problem be electronic or manual (gear) problem?

Any advice would be greatly received.

Do you think it's possible that the dizzy is able to slowly turn on its own? After you bolt it down, try to rotate it by hand and see what happens. It's probably more realistic to try this when the engine is hot. I would think that if you have a gear problem you would be seeing more driveability trouble than just an occasional jump of the timing.

bigric - dizzy seems to be tight. When I timed the truck I
could not find the spout. I thought I knew where to find
the thing but I cant. The reason I thought the problem may
be electronic is if you set the timing with the spout in or if
the spout is missing from the truck, would this cause a problem.
I have two strands of wires going to the dizzy - one goes to
the control module - the other is not pluged in to anything.
Is this a problem.

thanks for the reply - indo
