97 4x4 touble

I have a 1997 ford f150 with 4x4 manual engagement on the floor. It has worked fine until this morning when it did not engage at all. the lights come on showing 4 high or low, but only two wheels are engaged (nothing happens). Any ideas? Last time I used it we worked it hard in the woods in December. Thanks

Since you didn't mention any grinding or other strange sounds, I have to think the front wheels are not engaged. As I recall there is a vacuum hose running down to the front differential which actuates a vacuum solenoid. When the vacuum is applied, it engages the front axels. If this hose got ripped off somehow, then the front axles won't engage. That is, the front drive shaft is turning, but inside the front differential there is no connection to either the left or right axle shafts.

How about it, guys? Have I got this right, or is the hose for something else?

Also, if there is no problem with the vacuum hoses, there are 2 solenoids high on the firewall, on the passenger side. These lock and unlock the front diff. These are right near the hood hinge. If these go bad, this would also cause a problem.
When I had the problem, that was the first thing the mechanics checked.

last year my 97 f250 had the same symptoms.....the actuator that allows the four wheel drive to engage was gummed up...it is mounted on the transfer case, i think....didnt do the repair, but it cant be that hard...
