I have an 87 2.9L V6 when I first start my truck there is no oil pressure at all, I shut it off for a few seconds and start it back up and it runs at about 55psi. Once it warms up it will run at about 40psi above an idle, but at an idle it only gets 8-10psi. It has an after market gauge on it also that is fairly new. Any ideas?
If you had zero oil pressure you'd know it by the racket the lifters would make. Sounds like a flaky oil pressure sending unit. I think they are only 7 or 8 bucks.
I'm for sure that its not getting any oil pressure because my mains and lifters start knocking extremely loud but once i restart it and the guage goes up they quiet down.
I had a similar prolem with my 92 Ranger, no oil pressure when I would start to accelerate, but would come back when I stoped and let it sit for a few seconds. I has to change the oil pump screen, the oil pan gasket dry rotted and got sucked into the oil pan thus clogging the screen. Good Luck.
I've heard of that problem on some years of the 2.3 liter, but supposedly Ford used a silicone bead on the pan & it was the silicone that would clog the oil pickup. I've got 221K on my 87 2.9 and havent had any oil related problems. I use synthetic 10-40 & change it every 12K miles since I do mostly highway driving. About a year ago I saw a banner on a quick lube place advertising engine oil system pressure flushes for 80 bucks. Stopped & took a look and they had one of these gadgets www.redwoodgeneral.com/flush.htm If I was in this situation I would probably spend the 80 bucks & have it done. Cant imagine the oil filter causing this, but could'nt hurt to change it & see what happens.
