Had this molar in the back that's been real sensitive to sugar, hot and cold.
Had a filling put in, problem didn't go away.
Now I get a root canal. I suppose I deserve it - I've let this tooth go for about a year now
Any experience with this, guys? I'm planning on calling out of work tomorrow, since this is a good opportunity to sit on my butt and play on FTE (as opposed to sitting on my butt and reading a book at the airport).
Appointment is for 0800 tomorrow. Details to follow.
Honestly, you're better off just getting the tooth yanked and an implant put in. Basically the same amount of money and less pain/time in the chair. With the root canal, you'll have at least three visits. First one to drill it out and fill it in (set the post), second one to get a mold made for the cap, and the third to install the cap. Biggest thing about root canals is they are always a low level infection, no matter how careful they are in doing it. If you do stick with that route,, make sure they don't use ANY mercury. Only the amalgum (sp?) stuff. Otherwise,, it's pretty painless once your gums stop being sore. They are going to take out the nerves/root so there isn't anything to hurt anymore. Just be sure to weigh all the options available to you before making a decision.
I think I'll be ok - my dentist is really good (best dentist I've ever had!) and is top-rated. He said it shouldn't take more than an hour. I thought that was bogus, but I looked around on the internet, and the general consensus is that with the new gadgets they have, it takes one visit and about an hour of work.
Either way, we'll see. I'd prefer ripping out all my teeth and putting in ceramic (or even better, steel) replacements.
Speaking of teeth, I dated a girl that had so many cavities that she talked with an echo. I can still hear her, "STOP THAT, stop that, stoop thatt. She had long black hair that hung in ringletts to her waist - from her armpits. What the hell, it was closing time.
I hope your dentist is not like mine - he puts about a dozen utensils in my mouth and then asks me questions. I'm thinking of working out an answering system with him - one "auggh" means "yes", two means "no", but I don't want to anger a man who is drilling holes in my head. Rule of thumb: Never schedule a dental appointment when your dentist has a car payment due. Good luck - better you than me.

I had one done in September. I remember being so nervous, that I wanted to vomit. It actually was very painless. Had no ill effects except for sore gums for about half a day.
Good luck.
Had one at 10 AM and was at work by 2PM. Same issues could not stand cold or sweets. The pain was unbearable.
My dentist is GOOD felt no pain and everything is okay. This was my 2nd or 3rd root canal.
You'll be in the chair an hour maybe.
Matt,
I have had 3 root canals. I STRONGLY encourage you to see an Endodontist as opposed to a genereal DMD.
They can do a root canal in 1 visit, and is relatively painless -aside from a needle stick to numb it.
I had one tooth abcess and the infection spread into a sinus cavity. I got REAL ugly.
IMHO, when you've GOT to have it, a root canal is the best money you ever spent!
We'll see how it turns out - I'll be kicking back in the chair within the next 6 hours. I have faith in this guy - he's a real professional. Best dentist I've ever had, and I HATE going to the dentist.
And if something goes wrong, we'll pull the stupid tooth out. I quite frankly don't care - as long as the pain stops.
We were laughing like a bunch of idiots the whole time, telling stupid jokes and stories.
Slight pain from the metal clamp they had on there but otherwise, nothing. Didn't hurt at all.
For those of you who are avoiding getting a root canal done, don't sweat it - it was actually entertaining.
The bill wasn't, though - $732.00 Please remind me again what my dental insurance pays for???
Oh well, it was worth it if I can drink cold beverages and eat warm meals again. Besides, I'm about to get looped out on some painkillers (he said to take them regardless for one day. Doctor's orders )
