I have been back and forth with two dealers, and FORD, about my brake problem. Every time I apply the brakes to slow down in traffic - not hard stopping - I get the loudest squeal you could ever imagine. It is progressively getting worse. The first dealership changed the pads stating there was a service advisement on the 03 F150 brake pads. It went away, but then came back with a vengeance. The dealer then told me "It is the nature of the beast and is completely normal". It is so loud that people turn and look in disbelief as I drive by. It's very embarrassing since it is a $32k truck.
The second dealer I took it to went for a drive with me and couldn't believe his ears. But after he got back to the shop he told me the same thing, "It's within acceptable levels by FORD's guidelines". He then told me it is my driving habits.
Has anyone else had this kind of problem? I haven't heard another F150 on the road with the same noise, and I am listening very carefully these days. I don't know what to do.
Notice my signature. I have the same sort of truck but not the 7700 package. Maybe someone knows if the 7700 package means a different set of rotors/pads than the stock F150.
I just recently passed 10k on my truck and the brakes are quite. Not a squeek out of them.
Maybe someone with a 7700 package could response and advise if they have a noise problem with the brakes.
Ford states in the owner's manual that some squeeling is to be considered normal but I dont think it should be loud enough or frequent enough to cause people to look.
Like Super said I think it might be a good idea to try a different dealer or get on their case a little bit more and have them try another set of pads.
If you were willing to put out some money out of your own pocket you could try some aftermarket pads and see how they are. At 6600 miles you shouldn't have to though.
After the second dealership told me it's normal (even though the service tech told me it was pretty damn loud) I contacted Ford. They told me it's normal, and that they rely on the Service techs and Service Mgrs to make that determination. They basically told me tough, deal with it!
I really can't believe this. It is so incredibly loud, and getting worse by the day. It is so embarrasing. My neighbor bought a Ram 1500 and points out how quiet his is. I will never buy another Ford truck...which is sad because I like everything else about it. The service support is pitiful.
Obviously I can't sell this truck because noone will buy it with the hideous squeal, I'm stuck with it!
my 2003 F-150 has very quiet brakes at 5000 miles, but it does leave an obnoctious amount of brake dust on my wheels. I wonder if that has anything to do with the sevice bulletin on the pads? It only does it on the front.
I hear ya man
The 7700 is a heaver duty brake, and rotors. You will have more wheel studs and larger size. Noise that bad is Not Normal. Our trucks see a loooot of stop and go driveing, and its not a problem for us. We use Raybestus (sp) pads. I would recomend resurfaceing the rotors. MAKE SURE THE MACHINE SHOP PUTS A NON DIRECTIONAL FINISH ON THE ROTOR. CLEAN THE ROTOR BEFORE INSTALLATION, AND ONCEMORE JUST BEFORE YOU HANG FRASH PADS BECAUSE OF THE WHEEL BEARRING ADJUSTMENT YOU MIGHT GET GREASE ON THE ROTOR, NOT GOOD. Make sure to use the shims in the brake pad box. Torque the wheels, and drive without jamming on the brakes hard for the first few miles. Good luck. Ps if the machine shop asks what is a non directional finish on the rotor. LEAVE.
Even since I posted this thread it has gotten worse. And just this morning another 7700 pkg truck passed me and stopped as I was crossing the street with no noise from the brakes.
I'm going to take your advice and get to the shop tomorrow. Hopefully that will work and I can begin driving the truck without earplugs.
Sad to say this is probably my last FORD truck. I like the rest of the truck, but I have received no satisfaction from FORD.

wes
i HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, WITH THE EXCESSIVE dust, AND THE UN-BEARABLE SQUEALING, ON A DODGE TRUCK. THE SOLUTION TO IT WAS I WENT TO O'RIELLY, AND BOUGHT THEIR LIFETIME BRAKE PADS, AND HAD THEM INSTALLED, AND I ALSO HAD THE FRONT ROTORS RE-DONE.
RESULT........... NO MORE SQUEALING.
I'M NOT A MECHANIC, I HAD IT DONE.
I REALLY ELININATED THE PROBLEM WITH THE PURCHASE OF A NEW FORD!!!!!!!!
I OWNED A 1993, 2-1995'S, AND A 1996, AND PUT UP WITH THE TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIPS TO GET THE PADS REPLACED, (ALOT), TO ELIMINATE BRAKE DUST.
WITH THE 2001 XLT, AND THE 2002 KING RANCH, SO FAR, NO BRAKE DUST AT ALL.
My 03 7700 has 11000 miles on it and my brakes are quiet, nary a sound. Seems like I have read about other brake problems with these 7700's elsewhere on this board.
Drive around the dealers lot on a busy Saturday afternoon and complain about your brakes and the noises so other customers can hear you.
