I recently purchased a used 1999 F250 7.3 Diesel and it runs great under normal driving conditions. But when i put on my 2000 lb. cab-over camper and drive up large grades* it overheats**. After my first trip from San Diego to Las Vegas I flushed the radiator, replaced the thermostat and used the coolant additive from Ford. Then I went on a trip to Glamis and it overheated again. Please help.
*Large grades = I-8 West coming back from Glamis, I-15 North to Las Vegas
**Overheating = The temperature gauge goes and touches the edge of the red with the heater on full, driving at 45mph. As soon as I crest the grades the temp goes back down to normal and stays there. No overheating problems in traffic just on big hills.
There's got to be a problem with either the thermostat, or a flow problem in the system. I've hauled a large trailer over the Cascades in 90* heat without the temperature gauge moving.
Since you've had the thermostat changed, I'd be tempted to rule that out, though that could still be the problem. If it were installed incorrectly, it might not be opening properly, and causing the system to overheat.
It could also be caused by the water pump not functioning properly. If you paid someone else to install the thermostat, I'd think about having them troubleshoot it for you.
I seem to remember on one of the sites (DieselStop or other) that all t-stats are not created equal. Some are too long, do not close properly and actually will cause a reverse flow and consequently, overheating.
I had a 87 6.9 with simular problem, The fix was to get the radiator roded out. Like you I bought it used and the guy I bought it from he only used water in the radiator. This caused mineral deposits in the radiator, which caused a restriction of collant flow which showed upduring extra duty on the motor. Other wise the truck ran fine..... Don't Use Straight Water in radiator!!!!!!!! It Cost me 4200.00 to fix in long run.
