I am having problems with a noisy lifter. I think a push rod might be bent or the rocker arm may need to be tightend, but i am trying to find out what size the push rods are so i can go to larger. The engine is a 1976 360fe bored to a 390. any help would be great.
Do you have a hydralic set up or solid lifters? If you have hydralic lifters then you might tighten you rocker shaft again. A loose rocker shaft would certainly create some noise more than likely. I've had bent pushrods from time to time but they didn't make any noise. They could if they were severly bent. As far as the size of the pushrods are you looking for length or diameter?
Does the noise go away after the engine runs for a while? If so, you might just have a sticky lifter, needs oil pressure to come up to charge it. (hydraulic lifters of course) It could also be a sticky lifter if it contiues to click. Try pouring a quart of trans fluid in the engine oil and running it for an hour or so, then change the oil with some fresh stuff and change the filter. Trans fluid is a good cleanser and might free that lifter up.
Solid lifters are adjustable, I believe, so if they are solid, you could try adjusting them. A chiltons or haynes repair manual will give you directions to do that. There might also be something in the trouble shooting section of the manual as well.
I hope you don't have a bent push rod. Try other stuff first.
i agree with blacktail427 but i noticed you said it was a 360 bored to 390 do you mean its a 360 with a 390 crank, because you cant bore a 360 out to 390 CI.
Ray, is your spedo working right now? I thought i had a lifter out, but the same time i started hearing the noise my spedo stopped working, after buying a new set of lifters i did some more investigating and found out that the clip holding my cable into the spedometer broke and i was hearing the cable spin and hit the cluster. I know it is a long shot, but just relating an experience to you
Everybody gave you good advice. Also if you happen to remove the rocker shaft for some reason, make sure you put the bolts back in the right spot. One of the bolts has a special shank for oiling purposes. If it's not in the right spot the shaft could break. I've done it twice. It sounds like a noisy lifter. Also the 360/390 have the same bore(4.05). The 360 has a 3.50 stroke. The 390 has a 3.78 inch stroke.
