97 expy 5.4 egr valve

97 expy 5.4 egr valve
i have a 97 expedition with the 5.4. my check engine light has been coming on every once in a while and when i check the code out with my obd 2 it says either insufficient or excessive egr flow. should i replace the egr valve completly, or can i just take it out and clean it. could it be something other than the valve itself. thanks for any help you can give me.
