cat-back systems

Which company makes the best cat back system for the 4.0 ranger?

Yes i have a Gibson on my 02 f350 v-10, they make a very nice and easy to install system but not really that much of a noticable sound difference, at least on the v-10 engine. Maybe different on the v-6.

Yes, I've been real happy with the Gibson cat-back system on my 3.0L Ranger......Very nice tone, and no obnoxious "droan" sound on the highway, like I have heard with the Flowmaster cat-backs.

Me too on the Gibson, seems that those of us that have gone the Gibson route have no regrets. Just understand that it's not a super loud system, it's designed with more performance in mind and to keep the sound out of the cab. I have it on the ol OHV 4.0 and the sound is good on the outside but not much different inside. It gives V-6's more of a lower rumble that makes it sound more like a well tuned V-8 and there is a noticable power increase, especially if an intake system is in place.
But as far as the best goes, who knows, they all have their selling points, I can just say that for me the best was Gibson.

Not Sure

I'm not really sure what you're looking for but i've read that the Gibsons aren't good if you plan to offroad or tow anything significant. Also i've listened to sound clips of the Gibson dual rear exhaust on an F150 and it didn't really sound like what i would want but to each their own. I personally prefer the flowmaster 40 series and you can either put that in with the stock exit or do a dual rear or whatever you want just do your own piping or have a shop do it for not too much. The 40 series flowmaster has a decent tone when you get up on it but other than that just a nice throaty moan that's not obnoxiously loud like some i've heard. If you want loud go dual straight pipes

Actually the Gibson swept sid is designed with towing and off road in mind, at least according to Gibson. I wouldn't get anything that exited straight out the back because it you get stuck and have to back up, there's a good chance you will clog up the exhaust. Supposedly they are designed to give more power at lower RPM's, at least according to Gibson.

better yet

i agree with the rear exits and clogging... i'm not sure what i'm getting for my truck yet because of that but i do know if you really don't want them clogged just get a snorkel and some stacks... then you can go through really deep puddles
