I tried to unhhok this wire to by pass the speedo sensor and guess what, the speedo still worked. After talking with a Ford mechanic, I realized that it has nothing to do with the speedometer!
>I tried to unhhok this wire to >by pass the speedo sensor and >guess what, the speedo still worked. >After talking with a Ford mechanic, >I realized that it has nothing >to do with the speedometer! Hmmmm .... If you refer to the '99 F-Super Duty wiring diagrams (specifically, page 42-3), you'll see that the rear differential speed sensor does appear to be connected to the speedo through the ABS module and the junction box fuse/relay panel.Obviously, from the results of your experiment, that isn't so.In this secret world we now find ourselves living in, "proprietary information" is often used by MFRs to block us from understanding how things work. For example, the powertrain control module is the brains for virtually all of the electronic sensors in the vehicle, yet we can't even get next to a schematic diagram of the PCM.As irritating as such policies may be, there's no escaping it! Tom
>So where is the speed sensor? Transfer >Case maybe? No, because the transfer case only appears on 4WD vehicles, and you can be sure that the speedometer input signal is generated at a location that's common to both 2WD and 4WD. In reviewing the wiring diagrams, The VSS (vehicle speed sensor positive) stiill HAS to come from the ABS module, whose VSS inputs come from the diff speed sensor on ALL vehicles, with additional inputs from the front wheel speed sensors which only appear on 4-wheel ABS vehicles. One question needs to be addressed .... Do you have 4-wheel ABS on your truck? If so, then you have 3 separate wheel-speed inputs to the ABS module; one from the rear diff, and one from each of the front wheels. The redundancy of inputs from 4-wheel ABS would serve to explain why you still had speedometer function with the rear ABS disconnected. What's the story? Tom
>You mean you tried to defraud either
>the dealer or the next purchaser.
> Thanks.
you people are idiots. the speed sensor goes to the computer to let it know when the rear tires lock or slow down dramatically. it does not have any idea how fast the truck is going. it only calculates difference between truck and tire speeds. get a life. read a book. learn a trade
Acutally, I believe that the wires that go to the rear dif are the speedo pick-up. Ford has used a magnetic pickup in the rear diff for some time to drive the speedo.
well then maybe you can help me! my speedometer will stop working then back on a little wile later back off, there are no other symptoms! no lights come on, the odometer and trip counter still work??? i don't get it! please help!
