I would have to say that my favorite cartridge is the .44 mag. In a carbine it makes for a good deer gun around here. Mabee it's overkill to some people but I like it. My favorite varmint is the .22 mag but I got a new .17 and will have to try that out. So what do you guy's like?
On a somewhat related side note: I saw a saying on the back of a shirt the other day that said "Before you mess with my flag or my truck, let me oil my gun."
thought that was hilarious.
thats a tough question, i love each one i have. i do not like the .45/70 at all. at least not in the marlin 1895 guide gun. did not impress me much.
.30/30 i can work wonders belive it or not (marlin 336)
.30/06 nice groups at long and short distance (browning A-bolt)
.270 available in low and high grains, making it diversified (Win 70)
.22 can get a little boring but fun for messing around with cans etc. my old mossberg bolt fires like a BB gun
my favorite for varmmit shotting would also be the .22, for a handgun prolly the .44 mag, for a hi-power fifle the 30-06 and 308 for knock down power. and a .444 for a elephant killer.
I think the best all-round cartridge has got to be the 30-06. Load it heavy or light; tailor the bullet weight to your game…very versatile. A lot of cartridges are 'good' but limited in their use.
Wish I had a .338 Weatherby Magnum. Thats gotta be the finest rifle. Not to discredit what I do have.
Looks like a nice .44 or .357 magnum is in order after my wife crossed paths' with two ferrel hogs the other morning.
.243 .30/30 .30-06
I like the 30-30.I found with the higher cal.rounds i had more more meat destroyed by the impact.I usually dont take long shots .for a long distance shot i prefer the 30-06.lots of wallup and accuracy, good rifle for moose, but not for deer at close range. don't own a hand gun yet,but i'm looking in to one for bow season.
I like the 45-70 in my Marlin 1895. I researched this round and can use it for anything from a boar to an elephant. Not that I'll be hunting elephant. The one drawback people don't like is in a barrel in the 18.5 to 20 inch range it is not a long range, beyond 250 yrds, round. So you have to stalk what you are hunting. In a rifle with a longer barrel you can get out further. I shot my first deer this season using Remington 405 gr. lead flat nose at 75 yrds and it went thru the deer, which I lost in a big mess of cattails. Next hunt I'll be using the 300 gr. hollowpoints.
The 7mm mag, 270, 25-06, 22-250, 223, and 22lr are my favorites. The 22 is cheap and fun to shoot. The rest are great for varmints and deer. They are accurate and they shoot flatly. Aside from the 7mag the ammo is priced well. The 7mm mag, 270, and 25-06 are effective for hunting larger game such as elk. The 30-06 is a good caliber, although the range and ballistics are not quite there. The casing was used to make great cartriges such as the 270, 280, 25-06, 308, and 243.
I like the oddballs. Rifle- 30/338 magn in a Remington 40X or my custom Sako in the same caliber. Pistol- 38/45 ACP. It's the 45ACP necked to 357. It makes the old Gold Cup shoot with the 357 mag revlovers only semi-auto. Personal carry gun is the 30 Automag.
