Hey guys, I though that it would be cool to start a conversation on the different times that our pickups may have ran in the Quarter Mile Drag strip.
Well this story is no lie. I have a 1972 Ford F-100 Ranger XLT that I bough from an old gentlemen that I go to Church with, and he bough it off of a car lot in the 70's. Anyway, in my home town durring the summer time, there is a quarter mile drag strip that is totally legal and infact gives out scholarships to the winners the Friday Night High School Drag Circuit. Well one night some friends dared me to run my pickup down the track in the time only's slot. So I unloaded my tools and spare tire from the back, pulled off the air cleaner and tweeked the carb a little. When my turn came, I was nervious thinking that this old pickup wouldn't do to well. Well to my surprise, this old beast is faster then it looks. I will have you know that it is all original other then the single flowmaster muffler that it has. So I took off down the track and ended up running a low 18 sec, which is pretty good concidering what it is. So tell me what your's have ran.
'69 F250 long bed
'63 390 - 40 over - 9.0:1(large port heads)
Comp Cams 268hr
stock 2bbl and intake manifold.
stock exhaust manifolds, 2" duals with 21" glass packs.
points wacked out, timing wayyy off, ran in 100*F.
less than 200 miles on the rebuild.
stock C6, 4.30's and 8.25x16.5's.
18.8 @ 69mph... went 58mph in the 1/8th LOL!
now have nice single 3" exhaust, carb/points/timing sorted out and it's broke in... and it's in the 60's*F now...
maybe it'd go very high 17?
I haven't taken mine to the track, because I still need a working steering column, but I think I can hit the mid 17's if I get fairly good traction
1967 ford 352 bored 60 over
mild street cam
ported heads
long tube headers into 2.5" duals with glasspacks
500 cfm 2 barrel
and a fresh rebuild
I think it was rated at 9.0:1 compression
Once I get it broke in we will see though, I might be surprised

I may go out this Sunday for a trip or two down the track to see if it has actually gotten better with exhaust/tune and weather...
Dunno... not meant to be a speed demon...
It's a heavy 250 with the stock carb, exhaust and pizza cutters... it's just that it's so darn fun! ...
Take the Mustang, set up for the track, or, run the tow truck/daily driver... hmmm...
I am glad your telling me mid 16's it sounds much better than 17's, I am getting pretty upset about this steering column ordeal, that is the last thing I need to do before I get it on the street.
The first thing I am going to do is take care of some personal business with some kids at my school, who think that there honda's are the fastest thing around, it will be funny when all they can see are is my rear bumper
Ratsmoker- I was looking through your gallery, beautiful truck,
you have solved something that has been bothering me for a long time, those are the wheels that I want, I saw them on a similar truck, and have been wondering the manufacturer and model # for about the last two years, those have to be the perfect wheel for these 67-72 f-100's IMO, thanks
Thanks, they are american racing taildraggers. They are about $50 a pop. If you don't keep em clean they will rust. Surface rust can be wiped off but if you let it pit you're screwed. I keep on them and they still look as good as when I bought them.
I'm not sure what mine runs, but I've smoked some of my buddies up to 100. Outran a newer 4.3 S-10 auto, but not by far. Those trucks are supposed to run in the high 15s stock and he had a couple minor things done to it. Smoked my dad in his 98 F150 4.6! He was ticked. From dead nuts stop I lag a little because of the stock torque converter and huge carb/cam, but once I wind up some rpms I start moving on out. I suspect I'd run a 16 flat in the 1/4, but that may be optimistic. My truck tachs really high. Like 3500rpms at around 75mph. I always thought that I had 4:11s, but the codes say 3:50s. This sound right to anybody? Was a 240/3spd truck. I'm running stock rearend with moser axles.
