I have an issue with my oil pan gasket. It's leaky. Needs to be replaced. I have been told this is a labor intensive job requireing up to 8 hours labor. Any thoughts or ideas on this. Is it something I can do myself without a lift. Thanks!
I am about to go through the same thing. I won't go through the whole process now, you can find it by searching this forum (search for "oil pan gasket"), going to the online repair manuals on the Auto Zone web site, or get a Haynes or similar repair manual.
I think the manual tells you that you need take off the upper intake manifold and fan shroud...can't remember. My whole top end is off right now, so I can't tell you what to expect there, but I there are numerous posts here regarding tips and trick on getting this job done. You won't need a lift, just patience, and a nice collection of curse-words.
I'll follow up with my experience as I work on it this weekend...if I get to it!
As a side note, this seems to be a VERY common problem with the late 80's-early 90's 302/351. I have just lived with it for a few years...I am excited to think that I will be able to park on my driveway again when this is done! Wooo!
Not that labor intensive, and you don't have to jack the engine up. Get the one piece rubber gasket from felpro and you can unbolt the pan and drop is an inch or two. Pull off the old gasket carefully (so nothing gets inside the pan), and fish the new gasket on (under the oil pump and feeder).
Well, one month later, and I am finally getting to this. I noticed some severe rust spots and paint blistering on my pan (once I wiped the crap off of it!), so I am going to replace the pan. I am running into some trouble getting the pan out. I have the engine jacked and blocked, and the oil dip tube removed, but I still can't clear it yet. Do I need to remove the entire oil pump assembly to get it out? The manual I read says no, but I just can't see how the pan will clear it....
I know this is a while ago, but I am going through the same thing and yes, the Haynes lies. I had to pull the entire pump to get the pan out. It may have something to do with the transmission, I have the E4OD. Maybe other ones have smaller bellhousings or something.
