I am having some problems in the front diff. I assume the clutches for the limited split are going bad. (creaking/popping noise under heavy load along with the steering wheel jerking to one direction) My question is this:
Can I disconnect the front drive shaft and drive this until I can get it fixed without a problem?
I think so, but you would want to plug the holes on the tranny and transfer case, but I am not sure if it would be wise, anybody else think differntly?
The front differential doesn't contain a limited-slip system. Ensure that both differentials have the proper level of fluid, that the transfer case has been serviced (fluid change) at the recommended intervals, and if the REAR differential is limited slip, that friction modifier was added if the rear differential fluid was ever changed.
UPDATE.. Here is what I am going to do after work today... replace front diff fluid and transfer case fluid. Rear diff fluid was changed after an axle seal blew out about 6 months ago. Still no idea what this "popping" under load is, but it only costs about 8 bucks to change these fluids, so no big loss if it does not make a difference. If i still have the problem, I will remove the front drive shaft and see if it goes away. If so, I will then have somewhere to look for the problem.
Re friction modifier.... I don't even know if my rear diff is limited slip or not... I am going to assume that the guy that did the work knew what he was doing. He DID know enough to use synthetic because he charged me for it, but I see no charges for friction modifier on the bill.
There will be a letter then a number on the drivers door regarding the rear axle. If it is limited slip, there will be a letter then the number. For example, H6 is a 3.73 LS. Try adding the friction modifier if it is limited slip
