OverDrive Button
Thanks
1.) on the window side of the cap around the button, insert a screw driver and pop the cap off (dont worry if ya break it cuz it a cheap part like $1.00)
2.) fingernail the button out
3.) remove plastic around steering column (three screws on bottom)
(to remove the lock cyl put the key in and turn it to the run position then press the nipple on the bottom with a scratch awl and pull the cyl out)
4.) unsnap/plug the harness connector from from the wire that comes out of the gear lever ( it is right over were the column tilts)
5.) Use a continuity cker to test that you get good electrical connection on each of the three wires. Be sure and jiggle the wire while cking as the connection may be intermittent.
6.) if you get good tone on all three wires it may be the button. but in my case the wires were giving intermittent contact.
The button is about $10
If the wire is the culprit you have 2 options. do what I did. Yank the wire out and make your own new harness. I did this with telephone wire (the stranded type) or you can purchase a replacement gear lever. It sucks but Ford does not sell just the wire or harness. You have to pay around $50 for the whole lever.
To install the lever there is a clip that you remove. its pretty obvious once you get the thing apart. It took me about 45minutes to do the remake the harness fix and cost about a $1.
Good luck@! email me if ya have more Q's and I'll be happy to answer them.
