my 65 250 has a hand pull parking brake, and since half the stuff isnt there and the hanle is frozen from lack of use, I have to replace most of the parts anyhow SO...
I got a bad left arm, I hate pull brakes, it hurts my wrist. is it possible to "bolt on" a newer foot pedal type parking brake setup? if so what year should i scrap the setup from?
On the right side you'll be faced with block clearance since the gas pedal is mounted 4 inches in from the edge of the block. Depending upon what size engine is installed. Have you thought about mounting an after market lever in the transmissin hump? I know you can get them for trailers and such that we use at work everyday. They have an adjuster on the handle that allows for tightening and loosening the tension on them. It lays 2 inches off the floor when not engaged and stands straight up when it is.
Ive been websearchin for an hour for an aftermarket kit that puts a parking brake setup lever on the floor (like a universal replacement kit). I find off road kits of all kinds but all are for mounting a disk on your drive shaft. I just want a handle thing to bolt to the floor someplace to work the parking brake.
I could chop one out of a car but thats to much like work if I can buy a kit to do it better.
suggestion on where to look? THANKS!!
I have to do some checking around to find the part # for the universal kits. I will look it up in fedlog and give you the name of the manufaturer with a contact when I find it.
I was looking at them on ebay for other makes of cars, and SOME i was checking out look like they bolt to the floor with 2 bolts, so making one from a passengger car fit wouldnt be a big trick, if I can find one thats as easy as cutting a small hole in the floor/bolting it down.
You know how many junked cars I have had towd off that had floor handle emergency brakes????
now I aint got ONE here..
see never get rid of your junk, you never know whan youll need somethin.
The solution really depends on what transmission you have (as in which 4gear) and whether or not is has drum type Park brake on driveshaft. Many (read as mostly all) F250 & 350s had this park brake set up. It was the way it was back then.
If that's the case with your 65, which it most likely is, there's no mechanisms in rear wheels for use as a cable park brake. That means replacing actuator lever with some form of cable pull will not solve your problem. Before you lay out hard earned Geetu$$ for stuff you can't use check this detail out on your Slick!
You have 2 solutions if I'm correct. They are either overhaul your OEM set Up/ system, or else get later internal brake actuating mechanisms from later model with same Dana Rear as your 65 F250 now has, and upgrade your rear brakes to cable actuated Park Brake System. . . . .
As for L/H kick panel cowl vent, you can fabricate spacer to move foot engaged cable type mechanism out off kick panel so vent & park brake both work. Just be aware of proximity of clutch pedal, or else you end up with a serious case "Kenworth Crowding" ( a class 8 Truckers thing).
mmm the book just shows the setup in the rear drums, and I didnt SEE any ebrake cables going into the rear drums, I ASUMED someone stripped them off for some dumb reason... I didnt look anywhere else. GOOD CATCH PETE!
As soon as its bearable cold outside (with the wind its near zero) i'll go do a crawl under it and see where the stock ebrake linkage/cables lead. I hope your right that sounds like a much simpler setup. (you wouldnt happen to have a link to a diagram of a typical setup would ya?)
I have a tractor with a drive shaft drum brake, so i know what your talking about.
still I would like to put the lever where a good arm can pull it, but if I have to live with it where it is, I will... and I wil pack a set of wheel chocks with me (like I do now in my nissan with no ebrakes, I get out, whip out my wheel wedges and stuff em under a back wheel.)
the chiltons manual for 65 to 88 ford trucks doesnt mention this setup at all... (thats chiltons for ya)
while i am drifting anyhow, whats the best shop manual for a 65 ford 250, that willinclude all the knowledge for a 73 engine also?
