Intake Tube Modification

Has anyone ever made a homemade intake tube and if so does anyone have any pictures? Is this something that will improve performance or is it just a waste of time? oh and by the way I have a 2000 ranger with the 3.0L in it. Thank you for any replies before hand.

I tried it once but found it difficult to find the right fittings since every circle is a different diameter. SO instead, I just modified the stock intake bok and left the tube alone.

Did you notice any more power, or was it useless?

I've seen a couple of how-to pages on the internet, although I can't find them now (big help, I know). You might dig around at The Ranger Station.

Power gains will be underwhelming, in my (admittedly limited) experience. I don't think it's a waste of time (unless you're one of those really, REALLY busy types), but don't expect to turn your truck into a rocket ship. It'll help some in the upper RPM range, less in the mid-band and not at all in the lower range.

On my 2002 I was content with pulling the air box silencer and insulating everything up to the throttle body. Did it give me more power? Possibly. But I still get whipped by my friend's Ram 1500. Sigh.

I would say yes, but not a lot by any means. It seemed to have more get-up and go at higher RPM's plus it added a wonderful growl! The great sound was just an unexpected bonus. Nice and quiet when driving normal, but rumbles when you mash it. Just make sure you create some sort of heat barrier between the box and the radiator wall. I cut the forward facing side of the box open almost all the way and got rid of the narrow tube. That way, air still gets in the immediate area, and the heat shield you create should do the rest. It was worht it, especuially since it was free. Good luck.
