I thought it was the infamous head gasket, but it was the timing chain cover...anyone else ve this problem in their 98 5.4l 4x4 Gator? It has 87K and out of warranty. If there were so many problems with this engine (5.4L) and the 4.6L why dont they fix it?
The Dealer said its going to be 1088.77 if the internal oil cooler needs to be replaced, 848 if not. Does this thing have an internal oil cooler??? This is the first Ford Ive bought...Ive had it a year and this is the 2nd major problem Ive had with it (dont get me going on the air ride suspension)......Very dissapointed, next vehicle will be a GM again......
Welcome to FTE! I haven't had any problems with my expy, and I have never heard of people having problems with the timing cover. What problems are you talking about with the 5.4 and 4.6? You could replace the timing cover yourself if you are so inclined, but I would reccomend you buy a chilton or haynes manual. Even a GM can have problems, but there isnt anything you can do about it.
Some do have an engine oil cooler which transfers heat to the coolant (antifreeze). Maybe he considers this an internal cooler. I would consider that cooler a good thing. It is provided on HD and police units. It seems unlikely that it would need to be replaced. I would definitely question him as to why.
I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with your Ford. Seems like a lot of money to do a timing cover. I think I would shop around. I wonder if Valvoline Maxlife oil or Barr's Engine Oil Stop Leak might help. Sometimes this kind of thing can be stopped by slightly tightening the bolts (if accessable).
I doubt my gator is a heavy duty model, and I know its not a police issue vehicle.....great another dealer trying to me.
In reference to oil leak problems:
(4.6L) look on www.leakyfords.com
(5.4L) look on this site mostly head gasket problems
I talked to several garages, they told me it is a 8hr job, which means it would take me at least 10-12hrs, not to mention the heads need to be removed...etc I think a bit much for a week-end mechanic. I tried stop leak but to no prevail.
Well I better go wax up the rear end and take it to the dealer!
