First post here and I am having a problem with my 2000 expy 5.7L Triton with A4WD. The problem appears to be when turning after braking with a grinding or banging from the rear end, happens with a left and right turn, gas mileage is way down, emergency brake is not engaged. I thought maybe a problem with the A4WD, any one have a similar problem and might be able to point in the right direction. 4x4 light has been flashing from time to time is the gauge section but will disappear.
I am considering buying a 2000 EXPY today 1-8-2004 and I noticed a slight instance of the exact same thing, when I stopped at a light then make a left turn I noticed the same shuttering in the rear end, could someone with any info on this please provode any helpful insight on this, as it will greatly affect my buying decision on this unit, and I would love this truck to replace my 98 EDDIE!!
Yep, sounds like clutch chatter...the clutch packs might need to be replaced. A fluid change might correct the problem, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.
Although I agree it's probbly the LSD clutches binding and new fluid and friction modifier would solve it, it's also worth checking the rotation of the rear wheels while off the ground to see if any internal brake parts are broken or malfunctioning.
Thanks for the replies to my question, I have never had a Truck with A4WD and I thought it might be a brake problem with it being slow upon going foward like i was dragging or pulling something. My Mechanic will be addressing the problem ASAP, i will update on his comments and reapirs to the Truck.
Where do you get this "Friction Modifier" fluid? I filled my rear differential with Mobile1 Synthetic gear lube, which said it had additives for limited slip differentials. I looked at the local parts stores, but didn't see any such additive. My 1999 EB Expedition chatters slightly when sometimes when it goes into 3rd and overdrive. Since the rear differential took a full quart of fluid when I filled it, I am inclined to suspect it. Perhaps this friction modifier can clear up the problem.
