I have 2 manifold for my 400. One is a dual plane edelbrock 4 barrel and the other is a open plenum holley street dominator 4 barrell. Any thoughts on what which one is better for the vehichle all thw way around. I have heard that the holley intake will give me better gas milage but I will lose low end tourqe.
The Holley will give you better performance at higher RPMs, ideal for cruising, or for circle track racing (which I doubt you will do in your truck). However, at lower RPMs, the edelbrock will develope more torque and horsepower, at the expence of a little more fuel (I doubt you would notice the difference if you also had a cam in there). For a truck, I would be most inclined to use the edelbrock, which I have on my 351, and I personally love it.
Interesting! I bought a F-350 that has the Holley manifold on a 400. So the Holley will really give better mileage? I wonder if a plenum divider would help the bottom end torque and power in the Holley?
The holley I believe has straighter intake runners, which is why it might have a little better economy, but it depends more on the carb and how well it is tuned. The dual plane set up like edelbrock has helps to keep the fuel flowing evenly to all cylinders throughout the RPM range, whereas the closer the intake ports are to the carb, the more fuel they will get, and the further away the oppisite is true, although with the carb at mid or WOT, the manifold will be able to deliver more fuel to the cylinders much faster than the dual plane.
I was also wondering about the seperator in the open plenum. I wonder if that would increase low end torque. Also this engine is not is a truck. It's in a 1966 Country sedan "galaxie wagon". The 400 is way better than the 352 I had in it. I am still looking for as much low end, snap my neck off, torque as I can get. Gas milage is kinda a factor I don't care what I get in town but I do plan on taking this on some road trips so highway milage would be nice.
