I'm not sure this is the right place to post this.. Around where I live, you don't see many pickups from the early 70's unless it's restored or still on the road. I am at the point where I want to start working on the bodywork on my truck. One of the first things that I want to replace is the bed. My bed needs major work.. I think it might be easier to find a new bed. None of the yards around here carry older trucks.. I guess they have better business with late model stuff since that is more likely to be on the road statistically. Well, I can't find a new bed around here. Does anyone around here know of some good places to try? Is it possible to ship a bed? Has anyone shipped one before? Is it cost prohibitive? Many thanks!
I don;t see shipping as a viable option. I wouldn't trust any to treat it right that would deleiver for a reasonable fee. It's big, heavy and doesn't roll.

If you find a good one, plan a road trip with a few tools, remove your bed and tack on some trailer lights to your truck. That's probably how I'd do it.
When I sold the bed off the shop truck('96) a guy came over and picked it up. Simple, we picked the bed up, turned it over and used some wood poles in the stake pockets to keep the bed on top of the original truck bed. A few rachet straps to hold it down and he went down the road.
This works only if you are picking up the same type bed, which more than likely you will be doing.
It's a thought. Unless you have access to a trailer? Of course, if the bed is 1000 miles away it may be quite the road trip.
There was a guy on e-bay parting out a '72. I bought the tank. I will see if I can find his e-mail or e-bay name. He is in Ill. The tank had no rust and he was good to deal with.
OK, the name on e-bay is Ratsos. I can't give you his e-mail on this site, however, go to e-bay and do a seller search. Then you can send him an e-mail. If that fails e-mail me and I will see if I can help. Hope this dosen't break any rules.
Billemc,
Thanks! I sent off an email to him to see if he had a bed available. I also checked for doors/fenders.. just in case (the less rust fixing, the better!). I guess I'll have to fan out my search to junkyards further out in the area in case he doesn't have any or if shipping is out of the question.
If you run without the bed on the truck, you need to rig up temporary mud flaps, or you will gettum ticket from local law. Lay 2x4 crossways on top of frame attach with rubber bungee's. attach mudflaps to 2x4 with drywall screws and flat washers. Attach suggested temporary taillights to 2x4.. and you no getty no teecket.
i know where there are alot of beds, there is a junk yard in pella iowa that does nothing but trucks. but being in NJ i would just drive around out in the country and look behind farmers barns and such as you pass by, if the truck off the ground more then likely you will find a decent bed somewhere and hopefully get a good deal.
Went to several Junkyards around here today and saw quite a few usable beds and cabs at a few of them. If shipping or picking up from AZ is even and option for you, let me know. It beeing desert..rust is never a problem out here.
Found one of those police spot/searchlights on one for $25 there.
my truck came from the walla walla washington area, and not being there i cant tell you if and whats there. but ! i tell you this, they do not use salt on the roads up there in that area. no salt = very little frame and body damage. Look at my gallery at my truck, it anit no showpiece yet but it is a good start for one, that is the original paint and everything. the only rust i have now is from these last three winters here in iowa where they salt the roads til they stay white, and it anit white because of the snow
I'm over in eastern Iowa and in 'search' for a good '72 bed. What's the name of this junkyard?? Do you know if they have any good beds and or cabs?? How about pricing - is it reasonable??
