I recently bought a Cobra 29 WX NW ST CB and just mounted it under the pocket in the dash of my 99 F250 Supercab. The only problem is that I'm basically completely clueless when it comes to wiring the thing. Where should/do I connect the power cord to the chassis and to the power source? I am 16 with no experience in this sort of thing so I could really use some detailed info here. Also I will be running dual antennas behind the cab, I may only hook up one though. How do I get the Coax cable from there to the CB? And I will also be getting a PA speaker. Where can i find one thats at least 25 Watts? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I'll see if I can help some. You should have basically the 3 wires, black, red and the antenna hookup. Not sure if the 99 is the same layout as the 2002, but under the cover of the fuse panel there should be a round 4 hole plug dead center, or a plug thats empty in there. You should get a volt meter or a cheap tester to check for power, usually you want power all the time. One of the wires in the plug are hot. You want to hook the red to hot, black to a good ground (there are several bolts with wires run to them under the dash, you can use one of these). The antenna wire can be run under the carpet to the back of the cab, in the back there are rubber vent plugs that you can run the wire thru, or on the floor there is a grommet that you can slice and run the wire out thru and to where ever you have your antenna setting. Make sure you get someone to measure SWR and tune your antenna. Now, if you want an easier way, but might get some noise, just run a wire from the hot wire on the cb directly to the battery, and then find a good ground. Check this out also.
sy5adm1n gave you some very good information.
Two other power options are buy a fuse holder that plugs in where a fuse goes and has another fused lead on it.Depending on which circut you choose you can have the radio come on only with the key on or even when it's off.You could also wire it to a cigarette lighter type plug but you may get extra noise this way.
Francis is a good fiberglass antenna and available in several lengths. If you change your mind and go with a roof mount,I would recommend a Wilson 1000 with a magnetic base.It does real well and has a strong magnet.
Also,as was mentioned previously..You must have a good match to get expected radio performance.
