On New Years, we went to one of my old nightclub haunts for the party. They were having prize giveaways, with the grand prize listed as a $500 car audio system.
Well, we won it. The owner repeated it was worth $500 and was donated by the local audio shop.
What we got: A set of Powerbase 5x7 speakers (2-way coaxial, chrome series, 75 watt RMS/150 watt peak.)
I looked them up on the net, and can buy these new for $45.
I'm not griping, hey they were free and we just happened to need new speakers in the truck. But I think there was a little bit of false advertising goin' on there.
Anyway, is this a good brand? I don't know much about car audio.
In home audio, the best speakers will be ones you've never heard of. You probably will not have heard of some of the best car speakers either, but if you can buy these for $45... they're not it.
Sounds like it was just a sales pitch. They proabably sound good, just not the quality sound you would get for $500.You still got a good deal on them though.
I dont know about the best speaker brands being the ones youve never heard of. Maybe if youve only heard of a few brands or something but I would'nt get something from some unknown brand. Sounds like you got a crap deal with those free speakers. I guess i would be mad about it and if you really wanted to i bet you could get something more. Like there was this one lady that thought she won a toyota in some contest, but she really ended up winning a toy yoda. I think she ended up getting a car in the end tho. I dont really remember but it went something lke that. Maybe they meant 5.00 speakers or something. Thats probably what they would say in court.
I went to his website, he was going to post a picture of the winners, but the site doesn't exist.
I could have made an issue out of it but I was on vacation, and I'm back home now. Another shady thing was that his ad for the party said "$500 in cash and prizes" (in addition to the speakers) and NOBODY won cash. The other prizes were promo booze Tshirts, hats, and free cover charge passes to the bar.
I think, that possibly when he saw who won, (meaning a couple of white out-of-towners and not the regular hiphop kids) he may have withheld part of whatever it was supposed to be. The guy passing out prizes was vague about it too, and I've known him for years.
Probably won't go back there next year, that place changes hands every few years anyway. Wonder why.
Kind of too bad but if nothing else you get to walk away with a clear conscience and no hassles. And your right - if you sit back and watch they will run themselves out of business.
