The 302 is lighter, more room to work, think about all those hi-po parts from mustang 5.0 that you can use.The trans.is great wish I did not give mine up,you will the small block bell housing, look in f-100,s with 300 6 cyl.eng. it will bolt up along with flywheel if memory serves, also the 460 is lighter I would have never thought but a mudding buddy proved it to me
the 351m has some good points for one with a 400 crank and pistons you can get a 400 or 408 .030 over. The 460 is not lighter than the 351m. If you go to www.projectbronco.com then there technical section ther is alot of good info there.

That's the first time I've heard a 460 is lighter than a 351M...how'd your muddin' buddy prove this???
A 351M is not going to be much of a motor as is. Put a 400 crank and pistons in it and a good cam and you'll have a stump pulling monster. It won't wind like a 302, but it will have tons more torque, as well as almost 100 cubic inches more displacement.
I looked at the site that was sent to me, it seems as I was misinformed, we took both our broncos to the truck scale at the local scrap yard his came in a couple hundred pounds lighter than mine, mine was 351m fully dressed motor, his 460 no a/c or smog, so I guess that could have been the difference!!!! I did not mean to pass along any info. that was bad. I do not have much to do with 460s until I picked up this newest project.I aplogize for any confusion!!!!!!
Putting a 351m in a '68 bronco will not be as easy as it sounds. I'd be looking for a good 302 or possibly 351w for your project. Of course it looks like someone already swapped it into the '76, so maybe all the parts and headaches have already been taken care of.
My 68' is by no means stock. I have plenty of room for any motor. (No inner fenders not to mention I plan on moulding the firewall & floor around which ever motor goes in anyway.)
My 68' will be strickly off-road w/ full roll cage, modified body for clearance and visibility and a severely modified suspension system, so as you can see I'm not scared of making something fit where it currently doesn't.
You can get just as much horse power out of a 302 (if not more) and it is lighter and takes up less space in the engine compartment. A 351m is about as wide as a 460, just a few inches shorter-If you have room in your engine compartment, you might as well go all the way. 69' 460's had the most horse power so look for one if you want to do the conversion.
